It's kind of sad actually.  Give him a loving, contented spouse, and Tony'd be happy selling patio furniture or coaching high school football. One of the things I love about this show is that Tony had all the raw materials to be a real human being, and a real hero.  But he let it all go because (1) how he was raised;

Sure, and the whole issue of who's responsible for what is a big one.  Whether Tony and his problems are the fault of his parents, and his kids are the product of Tony's faults.

I do like your reading of the therapy.  The total number of people helped by therapy at the end of this show is zero.  Tony's psychiatrist abandons him because she realizes she can't be treated.  Carmela abandons hers because he's too honest.  AJ, Meadow, and Janice's are just enablers.  Kupferberg is more interested

It's such a great scene.

I think the main reason Tony did it was the obvious one - to curry favor with the FBI.  I don't think there was any subconscious motive to it.

AJ isn't smart, tough, or hungry enough to take over for his father at the end, but I think he definitely ends up a Little Carmine-type.  Connected, crooked, and unable to escape the life.
