Not sure about Tywin having a viable backup plan in place to protect Casterly Rock. Before Robb lost the Karstark army, he seemed to have Tywin's forces on the ropes. When Stannis threatened KL, Tywin had to leave CR vulnerable in order to take advantage of the alliance with the Tyrell's and win at Blackwater. Right?

This seems to be more of an issue of pacing than of having characters to root for. I'm happy to let the next generation of protagonists do a slow burn on their way to consequential action. Seems pretty clear that the show is having a grand time messing around with conventions like "protagonists"; that it's by design. Also, with things like the assumption that the starting cast of characters — some number of volumes later — must be the ending cast.
