I'd say the lack of a pilot makes a drone a far less vulnerable military asset. If you shoot a drone down, you're left with a glorified (and broken) RC plane, but if you shoot a piloted aircraft down, and the pilot survives, you have a hostage and a source of enemy intel.

And they were both so close to passing the Turing test, too. They just needed another decade or two of development.
