Never saw it but I could tell it was horrible by the fact that it was always rented out at the movie store where I worked and all the most awful people in the world would always ask if there was any way I would know when it would be back in or if there was "one in the back" and then further irritate me by insisting

My friends and I loved Con Air for its awfulness when we first saw it. We quoted it for months and were delighted to no end to find a "Put the Bunny Back in the Box" Streets of Rage-style fighting game on the official web site.

I suspect there are movies like that still being made today, but we're too old to know what dopey teenagers find profound.

Like anything, there's "good" and "bad" suburbs. I moved to the 'Burbs about two years ago, but my 'Burbs is mostly younger tech people, up-and-coming academics and a few retired old school union guys. It's a great, highly educated neighborhood with a few good restaurants (more with food trucks), a decent art scene

@avclub-4c37107b9dedb73b90f677930bf7728b:disqus Oh, I totally agree, and my perhaps not well-expressed point was that the movie works by not trying to turn them into great men who stand up to all that's wrong with the world for profound and righteous reasons. The Office Space guys are just relatable wish fulfillment

Just to clarify, I'm saying everyone who likes American Beauty is a Nazi.

Excellent observation. I think "Office Space" works best of the "Guy Stops Giving a Fuck" Trilogy because it manages to avoid coming off as a giant, pretentious dick about it. The sincere depiction of co-worker camaraderie also helps it avoid the egocentric trap that "Fight Club" and "American Beauty" fall into. And

"Lol! ur gay" has always struck me as a counterproductive response to homophobia.

It's both.

Like Triumph of the Will, American Beauty is a very well made movie expressing horrible ideas.

My reason for hating is pretty much the inverse of Sam's. I DON'T hate the suburbs, especially the late 90's suburbs which was, in reality, generally the most pleasant place to be in an era of internet boom-driven good feelings.
