Well said. I think I tried to say something similar last week using about three times as many words. My guess is that a second (and hopefully third) season will help with the character depth issue. It's hard for any show to fully develop such a huge cast in so few episodes.

Zuko had his own ship, but he had no formal military rank.

It occurs to me that placing the airbender kids in peril could have been an opportunity for some cheap sentimentality, and I'm so glad the show didn't go that route, let them shine a bit, and allowed the big emotional beats to come from the older members of the cast.

Yeah, that's what I was picking up on.

Over the course of the past week, I've started to think that Sokka's "some people are just freaks of nature" explanation really is it and that this season is really about exploring the fact that some people are gifted with special abilities more or less by chance (which is also completely true in the real world) but

@avclub-951d3e731b6b2ac1e93cbba6e1b68e80:disqus  This episode was like the beheading of Ned and the burning of Winterfell (the book version, not the show) all at once. I know a lot of people were predicting it, but I didn't expect Air Temple Island to be compromised in so heartbreaking a fashion.

I too thought the execution of this episode was pretty exceptional. Yes, the season as a whole has had pacing issues, but I didn't feel it here.
