The rule arose in the 17th and 18th centuries when English grammarians imposed Latin rules for grammar on English. Same for split infinitives. Modern grammarians have disposed of both rules.

I know. The whole thing between him and LuPone - who was also great this episode - was hilarious. I loved how he would immediately jump on Hannah whenever LuPone put her down - "Relaaaaaax."

I don't know. I see your point, but the writing of late seems to heavily favor the "silly" and not-so-much the "funny," like they're coasting on their laurels. Knowing and loving the characters only goes so far without good writing. Maybe just me?
