I got that too, and yet I think he pushed it over the top by giving all the girls stripper names. I think that really contributed to how many people saw it as sexist instead of commentary-on-sexualization.
That's probably the best term I've seen for it yet: "totally interesting failure." No, the film didn't hit what it was reaching for, but it was certainly reaching for something interesting. Yet few people seem even to notice this. (Although that seems to be coming around.)
