Hey, it's a movie that Dowd doesn't like!

There is a certain je ne sais quoi to his writing that I find really off-putting; lots of words, very little insight, a tone of "I've seen everything and I am not impressed"…it reads like a bad version of what this site used to offer. Jesus, that whole first paragraph just goes on and on and on, and, what does it

I read that first sentence without reading the byline and just knew in my heart of hearts that this review was written by ye olde Dowd. It was not a good feeling.

Intolerable Cruelty will one day be properly appreciated and the internet will never forgive you haters.  The script is so rad and the movie really does continue to become funnier every time you see it (a la Big Lewbowski).

Yes!

I refute the notion that there is "nowhere to go" with a 60's soul-inspired sound AND out of sheer outrage, I challenge Bryan Bierman to a duel (I'm thinking glove slapfight).

Yup, through the ages SNL has a good ghost history of this kind of sketch and I thought it was pretty funny too.  Kinda reminded me of "Time Traveling Scott Joplin" in that it was pretty non-topical ridiculousness.

This gets a big red NO.  Song is rad as hell, but there isn't really a guitar riff at all other than the slide thing in the intro, just choogle.  CHOOGLE AIN'T A RIFF.  Still, awesome song.

Earthling gets a bad rap, but it's the last one (haven't heard this one yet) with like, real-deal hooks.  HOOKS, guys.  It's catchy.  Also, it's a pretty damn good combo of dance and rock at the time and one day it'll get a better rep.  Heathen and the other one that are most recent are fine, but kind of boring and

@emberglance:disqus - actually, I thought Visconti famously did "Low" (where he down-pitched the drums and blew everyone's minds) and "Lodger) (which had pretty minimal Eno stuff) but Heroes is pretty much just Eno.

Life Aquatic is my favorite too!  I think that it has the biggest emotional payoff of the first four films and really feels like a culmination of everything.  I think people hate it because:

Yes and yes.  This movie has a good idea but the execution is awful - you can see the baby steps from 70's super low budget Craven to Elm St. in this movie.  The production is cheap, the acting is mostly pretty bad and it looks like Little House On The F'ing Prairie with Ernest Borgnine going bug eyes every 15

I'll stand by Phantasm 2 being pretty great as well.  Different leading actor is obviously kind of confusing/stupid, but the movie still does a great job of nailing the Phantasm vibe and is the first one to expand the creepiness factor by showing whole burned out towns.  Plus, way more Reggie.

Great book!  Chris Adrian is such a great writer; definitely wish he'd get a bit more literary attention.

You know, I've seen a fair amount of talk online recently about how the remake of Black Christmas from a few years ago is actually pretty good.  Anyone seen it here?  Not sure if this is just revisionism for revisionism's sake or if that might be worth checking out.

I believe history (and me!  now!) will prove you wrong.  This is a movie that throws a lot of ideas against the wall while acting as a blockbuster, and it does so very well.
