That's probably because the creator, Dana Fox, based the two leads on her and her brother. So I guess you could say that she knows her characters inside and out. Literally, in a way (for Kate anyway).

I just finished re-watching the first season and it struck me how ZFT seemed to be referring to the alternate universe, but was worded in such a way that fits more with the Observer invasion than anything else.
