I liked both quite a bit, but for some reason never really connected them. It has been several years since I have read either, but I would say Years of Rice and Salt is much more straightforward. Cloud Atlas has more of a dreamlike quality.

Interesting that they went for so many call-backs. On one hand that seems nice because they are honoring the original, but it does eliminate the more-respected type of remake (the faux sequel/prequel). Yeah, that is what I thought too. Mommy and Daddy either adopt, buy or kidnap kids because of their infertility due to the inbreeding. When the kids disobey or disappoint them (which is inevitable) they cut off the offending appendage and throw them in the cellar.
