From the used bins I picked up copies of The Sweet - Desolation Blvd. and Marshall Crenshaw's debut album.

OK, it's a "kitchen taffy pull" that mom and dad thought constituted a rollicking time, right? All of the lyric web sites say something else.

I remember seeing them when they opened for X here in Cal. a couple of years ago. They were very good - the horn/keyboards added color that you don't often hear from opening acts at punk rock concerts. Your man Jeff owns some god-awful white shoes though.

I'm in love with Althea and Donna!

The Brel compilation is called "Infiniment." It's a 2 CD set. Amazon has it.

Growing up I listened to a great deal of "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well …" and I also listened to many of Brel's own albums. Since I don't speak French, I assumed the songs Brel was singing were basically the same songs that were on the soundtrack. About a year ago I found a Brel compilation that includes the Arnold

Favorite Schneider line/delivery: "Stop that beat! It makes me apprehensive. Sweat ruins my clothes - they are very expensive."

"(Try To) Remember A Day"

Elvis Costello - "Wednesday Week?"

That performance of Highway 61 from the Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert is worth tracking down. He's electrifying.

"The Sheriff, he come too an he said: 'Sam, how are you?'

That's an extremely narrow definition of "punk" you're working with there since it probably excludes all of the 1975 and 1976 NY bands except the Ramones and maybe the Dead Boys, but to each his or her own, I guess.

Sorry - meant to reply to Jordo. See? It's an old people thing.

I think it's because I'm pretty old, so starting with Talking Heads '77, I bought the albums as they came out. By the time True Stories was released, it felt like the end of their run was near. Many of my favorite bands from that first rush of punk rock and new wave were getting tired and/or starting to go through

I think of the ones I consider my favorites, and come up with "Love -> Building on FIre", "The Big Country," "Animals" and for some reason, "Papa Legba."

I agree with the rest of your point, but to be honest I did own a slave once. It wasn't for long - I made her bring me milk and cookies and do my chores for a day. I had to emancipate her when our mom and dad found out.

HDH actually wrote "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" a third time. The next time they just went for truth in advertising and titled it, "The Same Old Song."
