Actually, come to think of it, Hong Kong and Macau might be good comparisons, to a certain extent.  Sovereignty changed hands with promises that the new ruling power wouldn't interfere with the existing framework for the most part.  How successful that was in Star Trek and real life?  Not so much in Star Trek and I'd

@avclub-23dc117ef9479407fb6c6a666005af40:disqus  Memory Alpha seems to think that the oldest of these colonies would have been 15-20 years old.  I'd have to watch the episodes again to see where they got that from, it chimes with what I remember.

Well, I wasn't really defending the British Empire, just disagreeing with your comparison.  But, since we are here and I don't want to go to bed for some reason, I'll just point out that Argentina started the war by invading another country's territory.  Territory that it claimed, yes, but nevertheless territory that

I brought this up on another forum recently and I couldn't agree more.  It really is amazing how awful everyone looks, and it has always decreased any sympathy I have for Federation civilians.  It just drives me nuts, which is odd given how little I care about fashion normally.  I just take it as proving how bad it is

I never realised the Cardassian liaison was the same guy!  Which is odd, given that I would always think that the name 'Gul Evek' sounded familiar whenever I would hear it.  Ah well, connection finally make!

The main difference I think is that from every indication we get these are first generation settlers as opposed to a long established population.  First generation settlers had to know they were moving to a planet that was close enough to the Cardassian front lines and that the situation was fluid.

The thing that always drove me nuts about the Maquis and the colonists in general is the fact that they were colonising these worlds in the first place.  Hadn't the Federation's war with the Cardassians lasted something like 50 years and been brutal, with civilian populations being killed?  If that was the case, why
