He sure could be irresponsible with his money at times. I can't remember the quote, but once Daphne let him have it for buying a set of custard dishes. It was in the larger context of fretting over Roz seeming to be frivolous with money he lent her.
I've always been impressed when set decoration ends up fueling an episode's storyline. See also, Everybody Loves Raymond and the reveal of why Frank and Marie have that huge silverware on their wall.
