If it's any consolation, I've always found Vidal to be a wildly overpraised and crushingly tedious writer, both in his fiction and non-fiction. I feel the same way about Norman Mailer, John Updike, Truman Capote, Philip Roth, and everything except Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.
