Screw that. If True Detective is going to be about characters, then give me interesting characters who express a broad range of emotions and interesting perspectives on the circumstances in play and contrasting against each other in fun new ways.

It's not really one review though, is it? Every news item about this show from just about every site over the last two or three months has been a dire warning sign.

I always assumed it was a reference to MAJOR APPLEWHITE, former quarterback for the University of Texas and real live person with ridiculous name and not just a Key and Peele joke.

DA:O got a decent amount of criticism for lifting ideas straight out of The Witcher. You could get away with calling them tropes of the genre, but it was pretty uncanny. And not just for what you listed.

They also both have weird noses.

I'd toss Warren Ellis's recent Moon Knight run in there. Not only does it not require extensive knowledge of the character's history (though it gets referenced a lot)- each issue is a stand alone story.
