Fuck "co-opting a community she doesn't belong to". Who gives a shit anymore? Talk about what you want, so long as you're not lying or ignorant. She's clearly very aggressively pro-gay IRL and I don't see that as putting on a front, or even much of a marketing thing - she strikes me as genuinely quite passionate

Well, I think it's safe to assume that M.I.A.'s political lyrics are shallow - I mean, is there any reason to assume they wouldn't be?

Did you suck his dick?

You're trolling up a storm today!

Wow, that's… uh… dumb.

I thought it was all right, and not a bad introduction to some of the unique aspects of Chinese-American culture, and to some of the historical background in China itself. Very Dear Abbyish, as @avclub-7f87bb91e1944c0485c54044a3d85c44:disqus says, but I thought some of the segments were very good, although they've

But it's hardly appropriate when the people writing the books are universally from that culture - I mean, they might be (actually, they are) influenced by orientalist attitudes, but surely they have the right to express their understanding of their own culture? If it gets sold in an icky way, that's one thing, but I

I don't read much fiction these days, but I suppose Ha Jin and Hong Ying would be the ones that come to mind. Although I've only read a book by each.

Good point. Although I wouldn't precisely call that an alternative so much as a supplement.

I think that you're accurately identifying a marketing phenomenon, but doing a disservice to the authors of those books. They're writing truth about their experiences, and a lot of great books were written as a result.

Oh, ok, that makes sense. Thanks!

Damn I never read all the way down here before now, but you've been fighting the good fight here. Fuck these guys.

It really bugged me in Four Weddings and a Funeral that the girl learning to sign to bang Hugh Grant's brother was making "cute" mistakes by misspelling words, because it's not like deaf people are spelling every single word. It would have been cool if they'd actually worked a little harder at getting actually

No way, what @LurkyMcLurkerson:disqus said. I feed trolls all the damn time, fuck 'em.

Yeah, that's a good point. Shame that it ended up being the first big comment thread.

On the (unlikely) chance you're interested in actually discussing anything, why are you so against the idea that deaf people might get something out of musical vibrations? You do realize that they're not talking about some new-age mystical energy nonsense, but about actual physical sound waves, right? And that when

Eh, you've got a couple of people being somewhat confused, and a frequent trolling asshole being a trolling asshole. No need to read too much into it, I think.

I think it comes from being an asshole on the internet.

Both of whom created many, many hours of music with lyrics.

Hmmm…. well, you're kind of an ignorant dick, aren't you?
