I thought the 'commentary' scenes were poorly done, especially the scene with the actual Birdman giving a long monologue about the state of film. They took one of the themes of the film and then rubbed your face in it. This could have been done with a much lighter touch. Moreover, there was a jarring change in pace…

Does anyone else feel like Birdman was half really good movie and half navel-gazing crap? The backstage portions were really energetic and funny. Once it turned into an indictment of Hollywood and superhero films, it fell off quite a bit.
