Normally I'd agree with you here. Especially since Walt says in the season opener that it's about "control" and that the cancer made him feel out of control - so breaking bad makes him feel in control.  And you're right that, from a storytelling perspective it's sort of like a deus ex machina to have him Break Bad…

I remember all of these - I'd like to mention "Eskimo Spy" at this point - but hmmm… I haven't read the thread completely here… but I was a part of the early 90's Comedy Central heyday and at that time "Manos" wasn't a deep cut.  Manos: The Hands of Fate, at SFSU 1993-1995 was THE
