I would love for there to be a third Hellboy movie. But I would also love for him to to At the Mountains of Madness.

True, that's a fair point. I just think sometimes the "nerd" brush paints a little too wide of a stroke. And, like you said, it is often largely regional-based. That same guy who dresses up in Spock ears or wears an elven cloak would fit right in in Palo Alto, but would be ostracized and castigated in South Dakota.

@openid-111502:disqus True, true, I'm not saying anime/manga itself is misogynistic in general, because from what I've seen it's really not and it's one of the few places in Japanese society where you see women given high-ranking roles. I just think it's fascinating that Japan can produce such forward thinking stuff

Isn't watching movies and TV shows a pretty mainstream thing to do? And isn't that what the AV Club is all about. Now I'm confused.

But there are a lot of nerdy people who also love fucking women, violence and sports. That furry could also be a diehard Steelers fan (cause aren't they all terrible people?). I don't think the dichotomy exists quite as much as you and society as a whole believe it does. It's not an either or proposition.

Which is kinda odd when you think about the fact the the nation of Japan itself is pretty far behind on gender relations issues.

That line is hilariouus, but I think what takes the cake for me is the idea that quartz is some sort of spiritual absorbant.

Hey, ghosts can be imaginary too!

I think there exists, among some of the more vocal male nerds, this sense of victimization, an "us against the world" mentality so that when something that doesn't fit in with their cozy world-view happens they react extremely negatively. And in many their cozy world-views is the notion that women are outsiders,

(on a side note, I'm so happy I finally took the one minute to figure out you can @ someone to make their name appear)

@avclub-1f93a5d50953fac07d7e6f54827ce9bc:disqus Yeah, hockey is definitely less and less nerdy/outre-culture the further north you go. But I think that it's building towards more acceptability in the south. I know from my experience that there are many die-hard Lightning fans in Tampa.

@avclub-6b8aa777ed70e7f15a45947a0f0c5986:disqus Yeah, that's always been weird to me too, but what about those people who adore both? I have a friend who knows everything there is to know about Star Wars and Star Trek: TNG, but he also knows everything there is to know about football and played it in high school. I

@avclub-c26473f2f4772a2a52e4690515ce6e75:disqus I was raised and currently live near Chicago, but I have spent several years living in the Tampa Bay area, so I know what you mean about hockey sometimes being a "nerdy" sport to follow in cultures (the south) where a higher emphasis is placed on other sports. Oh shit, I posted basically this same thing on the first page. I too have problems understanding where I fit into this burgeoning nerd culture shit. I think it's easier if you're seen as  "preppy" or a "jock" cause then there's only one defining interest/ clothing style you're being pigeon-holed by.

My problem is, I'm not really sure I know where I stand with this whole nerd-culture stuff. I like nerdy things I guess, like Lord of the Rings, but I can't say I'm really obsessed with any of it. The only thing I really pay constant attention to is Hockey, but that doesn't seem very traditionally nerdy to me. Funnily
