It really was a weird, surreal time. There were so many hand-wringing introspective debates in pop culture media, like when it was ok for comedians to "be funny again"; hell, I remember some article in like Salon or the Atlantic that declared "ironic" humor to be dead.

I never minded the character too much, but it took a lot to overcome the residual creepiness left over from Shneider's portrayal of Dick Liddel in Assassination of Jesse James. Man, he was scary good in that role. Up there with Bobby Cannavle or Al Leitierri in terms of playing a genuinely unsettling character.
I'll go farther and just say any TV show, and quite possibly movie as well.
