I generally agree with you, but I was talking about the really old episodes— the first few they podcasted (The Technology of N-words, Atonement with Mannequins and Butts, etc.) Those are still some of my all-time favorites.

Harmontown killed it this week— Dan's spiraling Cobra Commander improv was some of the best non-D&D stuff they've done since coprolalic Johnny Cash. It felt like a nice return to the very early episodes.
