I should've mentioned this in my post - I heard that on local sports radio this week. I'm wondering if he was born in Philly but lived in the suburbs? I hear he was from Jenkintown which isn't "Philly" any more than living in say Northern NJ is NYC.

The original / first Evil Dead movie is among my single favorite movies of any genre, ever. The film is like a bad acid trip and it delivers everything I'd want out of a horror flick. I also think it's a terrific example of creative filmmaking on a shoestring budget.

To be honest other than Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist I wouldn't call anything by Tobe Hooper "essential." But aside from those two I at least liked Lifeforce, Invaders from Mars and Salem's Lot. The Funhouse just left no impression on me whatsoever.

1. Yes they're worth checking out. They're sort of like Sonic Youth had a baby with the Kronos Quartet. If that description sounds at all interested I'd say these guys may be right up your alley.
