I do love those books, but the ending angered me so much that I rarely reread the entire series.

Maureen Johnson is an entertaining internet person as well.

The Queen of Attolia is one of my favorite books but I am wary of recommending it to people because it's fucking messed up. Amazing, but like you said, that is one twisted romance.

I finished Bitterblue today and am still just astounded by it. I hope it joins the rank of other "heroic girl" classics like The Blue Sword and Tamora Pierce's work.

When she died last year, I was in the middle of writing my senior thesis on Fire and Hemlock and "Tam Lin" and I was a wreck for weeks. My personal favorite still has to be Howl's Moving Castle, for various reasons, but I also love the Dalemark Quartet. And Chrestomanci, always Chrestomanci. I've always felt he was a…

G'Kar's final comment reminds me of the bit from the beginning and end of The Haunting of Hill House:
"Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone."

I did like it! But I was still really disturbed. And I was watching with my brother a movie that had a fair amount of incest. That didn't really help with the uncomfortableness. Afterward, I turned to him and said "Soooo that was a great movie. Let's never watch it again."
I watched that movie for the first time with my father, thinking it would be violent but in no way expecting what actually happened. I was just cringing the whole way through.
