At first I thought maybe just had just accidentally killed one of the townsfolk.

From what I can gather, she was originally with her parents, who got eaten by zombies, and then she was on her own for some length of time until she happened upon the town.

Oddly, the part I found the most disturbing was when the killed that turtle.
