I don't really remember 30 Rock having any plots as tone deaf as the worst of UKS. The closest I can think of is the episode where they tried to address Tracy Morgan's homophobic rant.

That's one of my favorite sitcom episodes of all time.

Honestly that one kind of worked for me? I thought it was pretty fair to both sides. There were lots of jokes at TGS's expense too and how they felt they could get away with being sexist just because their head writer is a woman. And I think Jezebel is…not a perfect site that could certainly withstand some jokes at

Yep, there's a ton of trans and gay panic jokes in '90s/'00s sitcoms. You just have to remember that…hey, it was a different time, no one's perfect, we can still enjoy this show while acknowledging that this specific part of it was misguided.

Agreed, but the show could've gone further with that instead of getting tied up in the consent forms silliness.

Ehh I think Mean Girls' satire is more nuanced and layered than the college kids satire of UKS. I mean I don't think that movie is super insightful but its message seemed to be "teenage girls should stop tearing each other down because everyone else tears them down enough already" which is actually an interesting

Yeah, there's an example of a really good critique of modern feminism.

Taking a "woke" eye to most beloved comedies will end up disappointing you at one point or another. There's lots to quibble about in Arrested Development too. It's really best to just worry about the comedy first and foremost. That said, there's enough annoying stuff in UKS that I get people taking issue even if it

I'm an elementary school teacher and I wish I'd seen more jokes about fidget spinners than actual fidget spinners.

Do you really think Hillary would've brought about that change? I don't disagree with you but we are so incredibly far from that being a reality that knocking Sanders for not holding that view seems absurd.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with critiquing college students/activism if there are actual points to be made, but there just weren't here.

I think she is fully hands on with UKS to the level she was with 30 Rock. I believe with Great News the day-to-day stuff is handled by Tracy Wingfield (who was a long-time 30 Rock staff writer.)

I don't know, Xan's entire plot at Columbia was "they hate her because of how privileged she is" so I kind of feel like it went right over their heads.

I think that 30 Rock occasionally did satire very well too, particularly when they skewered corporate/media culture. There's hasn't really been any UKS satire that I have found on-point though. This show's strength is more in just creating weird characters and having fun with them.

Agreed. This is why even though I find a lot of the show's satire trite it ultimately doesn't sour me on the show as a whole. I don't 100% buy that it's even how the creators feel, it's just what they think would be funny. In this case I don't agree with them, but I'm not necessarily morally outraged.

I mean, these are kids rallying about privilege who go to one of the most expensive universities in the country in the world's most expensive city…the fact that the show never connected those dots in their takedown of them was surprising to me.

I agree, but IMO the issue with the college student humor was more that it just wasn't really original, funny or anything you can't find by a given hack stand-up at your local comedy club. I think there are really good and funny points you could make about liberal Ivy League college students - they're ripe for satire

The college student satire was bad (though not "Kimmy Goes to a Play!" levels of bad) but the Jacqueline/Titus subplot was so good that I think it at least balances out to a B.

No one seemed that shaken up by The Catch's cancellation.

I think it's just fan speculation that Bill is leaving. There hasn't been anything official one way or the other.
