I think he's got serious directorial chops, but his writing usually just isn't compelling.  I think about 70% of MAGNOLIA is fantastic which is enough, and THERE WILL BE BLOOD is superb.  THE MASTER suffers not only because the characters are unlikable (The Master even admits to Quell that only he likes the guy, and

For what it's worth, his character is generally a punching bag, and not in a "Tom-in-MILLER'S CROSSING way" good.  So it might help to see him in a role where he backs down a lot (and does a very fine job).
