I like to assume that that was just Ezri misreading her own attraction to Bashir, given that they do eventually hook up at the end, as Jadzia's memories. It's almost certainly not the intended reading, but it's less icky that way.

This was the first time I've watched this particular episode since turning 30 (I'm 33 now, and this isn't an episode I'd generally bother watching voluntarily) and that opening scene sort of made me feel like the show was implicitly criticizing me for being a washed-up adjunct professor.
