The movie reflects the contemporary development of no-fault divorce, which allows people to get divorced simply for being unsatisfied with the relationship. With fault divorce, you have to prove that your spouse did something to ruin the marriage, like adultery.

I'm pretty sure Streep's character wasn't a lesbian. She just realized that she didn't want to spend her life being playing housewife and hostess for a workaholic.

I'm one of the people who figured out the twist to The Village just from seeing the first trailer, because as a kid I had read the book Running Out of Time. The plot of that book is so similar to the premise of The Village that the publishers considered bringing a plagiarism case against the film.
