I never understood this interpretation of New Jersey. North Jersey, for sure. But I always felt like it was more of a Staten Island thing that everyone was really getting at. Central Jersey is straight up middle America. South Jersey has a Delaware/Philly suburb thing going on.

I agree. I like him in the show, and I think it has gotten better over time. It also helps that it doesn't need to be an English accent because there's no England in the show's universe. But it does sound like an affectation, rather than the way he actually speaks.

Hugh Laurie has a better American accent than Americans. That shit blew my mind.

Yup, I grew up there as well and no one has ever referred to it as Staten. It's pretty obvious that Mindy Kaling has never been there, which kind of bothers me considering all of the cheap shots she threw its way.
