Well, sure; and there remains a problem even today, when casting a part that rightly calls for a minority and going with a big bankable white star instead, or failing to even consider whether a part that doesn't necessarily require a white person could be played instead by a minority.

Goddam NuDisqus ate my last attempt at a comment, but I heard the LCD cover first (it was a B-side to "Daft Punk Is…") and liked it a lot; when I tracked down the original I was surprised LCD had played it straight, it really IS that funky/rockin'.
