It's a distillation of an action movie, there is not even a lot of violence in it. It's just that when the violence hits, it's very graphic and because it's so infrequent it just hits harder.

Never knew David Mamet was the inspiration voor Hank Moody (at least in the sense that the latter's God Hate Us All book was turned into a romcom). I still like Californication (the series, not the album)
As much as I was digging Grinderman coming on i was pissed that this meant I'd have to wait another week for more of this exceptional show.
In terms of suspense and lived-iness End of Watch comes to mind. But this show is setting a very high bar for future shows.
