I actually think the political aspect is intriguing and keeps the show from being an almost basic soap.

I see a lot more potential here than in the Smash pilot. Both Connie and Hayden were good. Turning Hayden into an actual character instead of a flat villain is in order. Balancing the soap with good character drama is gonna be key.
