Chris Mars was just as central to what The Replacements represented both musically and socially. If he ever decides to re-up I would need to consider breaking the bank for a ticket.

Given what was passing for pop music at the time, I never for a second thought that it had a chance of wide success, so I never saw it that way.

BTW, it's not that great. It's good for a giggle but I wouldn't pay actual cash for it.

I know, but the idea of buying all the albums again on CD just to get the bonus tracks is giving me gripes. Why I would be OK buying them all at once but not one at a time is an interesting question.

He's not the scion of the golf ball empire?

Too much fucking perspective!

I want to put a plug in for "Suicaine Gratification". To my ears, there are 3-5 classic Westerberg songs and almost no clunkers. It's not a Replacements album and it doesn't rock much at all, but it beats the crap out of the yacht rock that it's inspired by.

I have it on cassette, which used to (appropriately) be the only way to get it.

Seriously. Have you seen how much you need to shell out for this gig? There's no way I could justify it to the family, especially when you add on the requisite booze consumption. I'm going to drink a couple of bottles of Charles Shaw (red, natch) and watch "Color Me Obsessed".

Paul's voice can take some getting used to and they never made a record where it all came together 100%. You might try to find some of the live stuff on you tube but avoid the drunken mess shows. There was footage of them playing at the 7th street entry that was intended for a video which never happened posted at one

Alex Chilton? Kiss Me On The Bus? Nothing ever quite gets as jangly as I Will Dare, but that's because they were taking the piss out of Peter Buck on it.

Nice write up, but where's "If Only You Were Lonely"? Is it counted on the reissued Sorry Ma? One of my favorites and it shows that Paul and the boys were never really a punk band (As it was the B-Side of "I'm In Trouble".)

"We're not going to do a free-form jazz exploration in front of a festival crowd!"

As an alternative XTC choice: "Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me)".

Lorca's Last Novena by The Pogues?
I am Kurious Oranj by meself?

I am not criticizing, but Auschwitz is/was actually in Poland. So normal Germans didn't live next to it, which was kind of the point, IIRC.

Right, which is why Keith had a duplicate amp in the basement of the Fox Theater to record Chuck for the film as he (Chuck) kept messing around with the amp on stage so it sounded as shitty as possible.

You can say it's a guilty conscience talking and you might be right, but Keith is pretty clear that he believes a lot of Chuck Berry's sound came from Johnson's piano. Of course, Chuck still wrote the lyrics which are pure genius.

He did the armed robbery gig before he was "Chuck Berry" (still in HS) and has fessed up to it although he says the gun wasn't working.

Chuck also went to jail/prison for armed robbery and tax evasion, plus a six-month suspended sentence for pot and an out-of-court settlement for having video cameras in the women's room of his restaurant. All in all, a piece of work in the truest sense.
