Why does a stat have to be easily calculated to be useful?

Batting average is a more contrived stat than any other stat quoted in this thread.  Walks don't count for anything, not even an at bat?  Who decided that? 

Sure, RBIs will show you generally who's good, but why purposefully be vague?  To paraphrase Joe Posnanski, using RBI as a measure of a player's effectiveness is like being satisfied with a GPS that will tell you you're somewhere in Philadelphia.  I want to know what street I'm on and which way I'm facing, dammit.
