Not that they'll ever spend time on her backstory, but she's clearly from "the old country" and who knows what her part of Norway was like in the late 1910s/early 20s. Consider the horror show that Margaret came from, and it's possible that Mrs. VanA. grew up amidst violence or whatever herself.

I'm just amazed at how they get those young kids to act like that. I'm sure it must have been hard for Graham to have to do a scene like that with a kid about to cry (however they did that, I don't think I want to know).

The problem was, she was competing with the guys handing out flyers for the standup comedy show down the street. If they get five people off the street to attend, they get five minutes of stage time.
