I've never watched her show and I pretty much just know her by reputation (and from her one scene in 30 Rock), but she came off as an utter badass.

Agreed. I could see what he was getting at (my aunt gave me the first book when I was 12, in what I think was a well-meaning attempt to undermine my religious upbringing) but that didn't ruin my appreciation for the story and its various themes.

I read them in middle school / high school, and agree that the third book was a mess, but it still made me cry at the end.

Sam Elliott is awesome, but I had always pictured Scoresby as a guy in his 40s. I can't remember what the books said about his age or appearance.
