@Pervy, I believe we never actually learn why/how Gabe dies, we only learn he is dead during Claire's dream sequence. Basically, we know he is on a pathy to an early death due to his habits and poor decisions, and when Claire encounters Dead Gabe, he is finally happy and at peace.

Also, Jack spent the day with his biological dad who picked him up at the motel, which would be tough if the dad was in prison for murdering his moms.
