I'm not one to judge, but the commercials for this looked really bad, even with the airplanes-falling-out-of-the-sky-ness of them (which is probably a JJ Abrams trope at this point, like Speilberg framing things in mirrors).

I always found the opening sequence to be an ironic and bitter commentary on America's 1950s-early 1960s self-image when combined with the rest of the film. To see it as maudlin and homey and not get the bitterness and anger underneath it is misreading the film. This is an angry, bitter film.
