In hindsight, yeah, I get it, but I went into the comic cold, knowing nothing except that it was "brilliant", and about superheroes in an alternate timeline. at the start of the story, I wasn't thinking that there was one super-smart guy, one god-like mega hero, and a whole bunch of Batman's.

To be honest, the books didn't exactly make it crystal clear that the non-dr-manhattans had no special powers.  I assumed they did have powers for most of my first reading, until it just sort of dawned on me that they didn't (the story's universe made somewhat less sense after that)
