I don't know if this is an HBO thing, a crime show thing, or what.  I think it's an HBO thing.  Even family drama Six Feet Under did it.  Fraggle Rock also tended to solve its narrative crises via increased body count.

Maybe, by employing a bit of historical license, Marg' n Owen could have started up Branson, MO in some sort of gangster-y fashion.

The shithouse rats I've encountered tend more towards bipolar 2, rather the schizophrenia generally associated with "crazy".

shocking though?  In the first scene with Jimmy and Gilian, she gives him a hug while basically topless.

My only problem with Owen is pure jealousy, because the actor reminds me of "handsome guys with accents" who can literally walk into any bar, walk up any woman, say anything with their dodgy accent (even "ay, yer sleepin wit me, ya fat slapper"), and wander off with them.

holy mackerel.  I remember that nonsense well (cue blury flashback effect):
Mid 1980's, Boston.  A small "TV room" arranged around a 19" philco color set, with a strange decoder on the top.
The decoder is used to tune in over the air signals from a Pay TV station broadcasting only from the top of the Prudential Tower;

I read the AP article.  Claire filed for chapter 11.  In other words, it was a fiscal cliff.

I wish Canadians made more movies.  The good ones they make are good.

You're forgetting the one-two punch of "Far and Away" and "Nell"

Actually the term "Shooting Muus" originates in St John, referring to local pasttime of re-reading the novels of Norweigen author Rudolph Muus.  It is said that (to paraphrase), "You don't just read Muus, you mainline it."  Which is where the phrase "shooting Muus" originates.
