My kids were too scared to fall asleep after watching that movie - the whole thing felt surreal and soulless, and frankly terrifying in its bleakness.  They really hated it and each told me separately to please not make it some sort of holiday tradition.

Well back in the day, those movies had a watchability that's lacking now.  Because they had a little bit of a budget - even crap like the "Big Bird House" had a cast of dozens, sets sort of, a few pryotechnics.
