I think all acting is supposed to be at least a little overcooked.  Otherwise everything would feel like some sort of Jim Jarmusch ennui-fest.

While I agree with you, I still think the best possible musical would be a Bob Seeger Biography.  And in it they sing "Runnin' against the Wind" about 7 times,   And "Like a Rock" four times.
