I would only argue that the "art" has improved.  It was gut-bustingly hilarious in season one, and only sporadically since.  I still love it, but miss the huge laughs.

I got the sense that he really liked the attention of this amazingly fit, handsome, charming guy.  He felt "pretty" after feeling so disgusting after his first trip to the beach.  I don't think he was secretly hoping for sex with this guy, but wanted to feel wanted by this caliber of guy.
