SNL's sins (recurring characters, etc.) are many, but I'm not really familiar enough with SCTV to make a comparison. I did see one sketch on YouTube once: George Carlin in Annie Hall. I never knew Rick Moranis was such a spot-on impressionist, but he does a hilarious Carlin impression.

I've never read any of Matheson's stuff, but he wrote The Raven for Roger Corman (starring Vincent Price) and that is one awesome movie.
