"Despise" is a strong word, but I gave up on the Harry Potter books after the third or maybe the fourth.

Peter Pan has a dark aspect … he can't ever grow up, and he has no parents. The book makes it clear that we should feel pity for him, and that it's far better to be Wendy, who has a home and will become an adult. But the book doesn't hit you over the head with its message.
