Judge: War is God.
Judge: War is God.
Ten chapters down? Keep going.
Nevertheless, understand you will have to read it three times to make much sense out of it.
@ I aint passed…
Your description of the Blood Meridian allusion sounds a lot like McCarthy and I also hope someone knowledgeable could expand on it.
I take the Evening… to be something regarding the sun setting on the bloody Wild West but since so many parts of the novel are allusions to things literary or historical,…
I must admit I got a little "poetry" fatigue at certain points in the book. Sometimes, it feels like the author is tryin to wring every bit of epicness out of each sentence.
Yes I remember one joke from the morning show: Dave says, "Hey, the band is really cooking."
And the camera pans to a member of the band flipping a burger on a little charcoal grill.
Proto-Dave.
The title
One topic I do not think has been touched on in previous threads is the meaning of the title. What is a Blood Meridian? The blood I get but does the "Meridian" emphasize the western location of the narrative? Is it a play on AM or PM, the time of day? Does the second half of the title, the Evening Redness in…
I think at that point it was every man for himself and every man was very afraid of the judge. At many points in the book I was asking myself, "why are they attacking these guys?"
Also, I got the impression that once the enterprise fell apart there was an issue of the members of the gang being witnesses to each…
The fool
One of the many elements of the story I was not able to nail down on this first read of the book is the significance of the fool in the book. Why does the Judge insist on hauling him around? What happened to him? What theme of the book does he promote?
I think that saying violence isn't good or bad is a pretty grand point. Very chilling in fact.

Unlike many commenters, I do have the text in front of me (something to do with a sputtering financial services industry).
The key passage occurs before they reach the ferry and the J holds forth at length on the world and war (imho, the most important section in the book). Here is what he says (of course,…
No, no, no.
Holden absolutely does not believe there is a higher world out there. He is a pure believer in winners write the history. He believes his world view is correct only because it will kill off anyone who believes different, not because it is a reflection of a higher order. The point of the stones and rocks…

How soon will it be covered by Wrapped up in Books?
Way too late
I did not watch the last week until tonight because of a week long bad cold. However, I want to post a thought even if no one sees it, though it may give me the honor of last ever AV Club poster on In Treatment.
I think a question running through this season is Paul ultimately a failure as a therapist?…
I am hopelessly late but must ask if anyone else remembers Spy magazine's analysis of the creepy pagan ritual symbolism in the Alive with Pleasure ads. Very funny.
Oh, God, the Sci-fi channel version was awful. They should stick to making movines about genetically engineered sabre-tooth tigers.
Alas, the Dane is a tragic hero. He dies because he is the only straight shooter in a world of guys working the angles. Hmm, the Dane as a tragic hero, doesn't that pop up in some other story?
I think Miller's Crossing deserves new Cult Canon status if it hasn't already (is there a list?). Miller's is ten times funnier than Lebowski.
Mr. Pierce, please lead the charge on this. Ethics, its a matter of ethics.
Your answers have clarified my question.
In general, do you think the show is asking is whether Pauo is a good therapist? He brings it up with Gina, and the lawsuit re Alex's treatment asks the question. Are we supposed to wonder if he is doing good, or is the issue whether Paul can come to terms with this question.
