I'm not disagreeing with you about Springfield's sudden, inconsistent shift in attitude towards Homer in this episode, but can you point to some episodes after this in which that attitude becomes their "default response"?

Oh yeah, I found the songs enjoyable, that one included. They're just written as comedy songs so I didn't think the audience was expected to think they were as brilliant as they were portrayed in the movies. But I thought "African Child" was one of the songs meant to convey his low point.
