I've always thought Shelley Duvall got a bad rap for her Shining performance. She's basically a battered wife of a (sometimes violent) drunk. Before they get to the Overlook, there's the story of how Jack dislocated Danny's arm during a drunken rage. Wendy being jumpy and meek makes sense to me.
