This critic is full of shit - praising the songs but panning "genre excursions" that aren't "genuine directions for the band."

Yeah, Electric Warrior is superior. And what's with this ridiculous but commonly held opinion that all his songs are the same one-note glam stomp? Half of Electric Warrior is low tempo yearning and melancholy, as if he knew his early death was coming. See: Cosmic Dancer, Monolith, Planet Queen, Girl, and Life's a…
For once I think pitchfork got it right with their review.
I don't like this song (and I love the Beatles and some Lennon solo output), but the harking on the "imagine no possessions" line everyone does is pretty stupid. He's not telling everyone to give up their possessions right the fuck now, he's not even asking people to take steps toward such a world, he's asking them…

Ugh, I've read this exact music review a billion times. "Band gives up distance and musical meticulousness, gains warmth and emotional connection." Every time the new album is bland in comparison to older works.

Exactly my thoughts - I thought "Better Times" was the best track on Teen Dream, and that the rest was largely formulaic and repetitive. I miss their style from the first two albums somewhat… I mean, when did Beach House forget how to do a small song? Seems like they all have to have the big-emotion-repeat-outro…
One obvious, unmentioned screamer is John Lennon. The opening on the single version of Revolution and Well Well Well come to mind.
Holy shit, check out the original Silent Hill if you haven't. When the school/asylum/whatever first turns into sheer pounding madness… scariest spot in any video game ever. Always play in the dark.
Floyd is unmistakably great music while sober. It's even better while high. You've never taken an illegal substance, and have no basis for comparison.
@GeoGreg - Perhaps she was dictating?
Chrono Trigger, and I don't even like RPG's in general. Runners up: Mario 64, Mario 2, Killer Instinct, Counterstrike (yeah, yeah), Diablo.
Chrono Trigger was mentioned several times above - I defy anyone who played that game as a kid to listen to the soundtrack now and not well up a bit. That music is FANTASTIC.
"The songs on The Rip Tide wouldn't sound too out of place on albums by The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Rufus Wainwright, Antony & The Johnsons, The Magnetic Fields, or Sufjan Stevens. "
I agree with you, and think this is a fantastic record. Many music reviewers seem to focus on lyrics to the detriment of their musical appreciation. I don't understand that way of listening to music… any time I see a quoted lyric in a music review my mind boggles (people check out music based on a line??).
Interrupter, do you even—
—have a real name?
Or did your parents just call you—
—that thing we should've left at the truck stop?
God, what kind of parents—
—call their child something like that?
They must've been—
—illiterate hill people?
Who probably—
—blinded themselves…
We love the new Kaiser Chiefs album, and here's why you should, too
Dull music, hokey and awful promotional video (w/ AVC logo at the end, wtf??), bad call putting it in the newswire. I'd think it was some sort of prank a la the press releases AVC reprints if it weren't for the logo at the end of the video.
Saw them open for Clinic late last year in Minneapolis. Good live show, will have to check this out.
