I don't read the comics, but at this point I feel like the TV show might end with all of the '1st generation' survivors dead except for Maggie, who will be leading new survivors and the offsprings, like Carl and her own child.

To be fair, you can't completely blame Hollywood for that one. Zhang Yimou is the director, and he may not be aware of whitewashing or lack of diversity in US films because he's only made movies in China. He probably believes that casting Matt Damon would make the movie more appealing to a non-Chinese audience, or…
